The rhetoric and atmosphere were upbeat Thursday at the official opening of the new $200 million Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital.

The goodwill messages came from powerful state officials, Department of Human Services staff and in hand-written sentiments on five glittering ribbons snipped to formally open the hospital.

While Gov. Jon Corzine, state Senate President Richard Codey, an influential voice in the construction of the facility, and Human Services Commissioner Jennifer Velez all praised the people who made the new hospital possible, some of the smaller messages on the ribbons said it just as well: "God bless," "Best of luck," and "Best of health."

A new atmosphere

The new hospital, which will open for patients later this year, will offer a self-contained atmosphere where patients will live in small housing units of 25, mostly two-bed rooms, complete with smaller dining rooms where family members will be encouraged to join patients for a meal, new recreation facilities, music and art studios, and new treatment centers and classrooms.
